OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
NAAV Domestic Violence Awareness Art Contest
Each year the Native Alliance Against Violence (NAAV) supports Domestic Violence Awareness during October. This year please help the NAAV commemorate this month by participating in our first annual art contest. The contest theme is “Together We Are Strong”. As advocates we work every day to Empower, Support, Educate, and Believe in survivors of domestic violence. What does this look like in your community? Are there unique ways your community works together to promote non-violence? By programs expressing their initiatives through art – painting, photography, drawing, collages – we can see how strong we all are together.

The NAAV is taking a different approach in obtaining a venue for our American Indian Domestic Violence Awareness Day of Unity in October. Instead of us selecting a venue, we are encouraging tribal programs who want to share their program’s successes and challenges to serve as a host venue for the event. It provides us and sister tribal programs an opportunity to gain a first hand look at where tribal programs are geographically, to learn more about them culturally and to be aware of what they offer programmatically.
For this first venture, the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma Violence Free Living Program has volunteered to serve as host. We appreciate Sonya Spray, Interim Director for taking this on and inviting us and sister tribal programs into her community.
